Žurnal is an online project founded by the Centar za razvoj medija i analize - CRMA (in English: Centre for Media Development and Analysis). Acting under the motto "The only free territory", Žurnal has published numerous investigations on corruption and political crimes in Bosnia and Herzegovina since its establishment in July 2009.
CRMA is a founding member of ACCOUNT, the anti-corruption network of civil society organisations in Bosnia and Herzegovina whose goal is to unite associations, institutions and individuals in the fight against corruption. Since 2012, ACCOUNT has granted journalism awards to Bosnian journalists for exceptional investigative stories on corruption, raising awareness about the importance of publishing stories on the subject.
Žurnal is the winner of numerous journalism awards, including the EU Award for Investigative Journalism in 2022 and the Duško Jovanović Award in 2019. It was also awarded the Journalists of the Year award from the Association of Journalists of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2019.
It is the first online media outlet in Bosnia and Herzegovina to be assigned the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), used to identify newspapers, magazines, journals, and periodicals of all kinds, and publications in digital formats.
Žurnal's sources of income are grants from foreign governments and advertising on Google AdSense. Thanks to its popular series of investigative video stories called Afera (in English: The Affair), its YouTube channel reached 10,000 subscribers and is Žurnal's most followed channel on social media. From 1 July 2021 to 1 July 2022, Žurnal's website had 963,770 unique views.
