Unimondo is an editorially independent project of the non-profit Fondazione Fontana. It was founded in 1998 and it can be considered a pioneering digital native outlet. It informs civil society about global issues and foreign affairs in Italy.
It was born to address an audience of NGOs international workers, activists and volunteers. Over 450 associations and non-profit publications partner with Unimondo, republishing or contributing to the outlet, which has allowed it to reach a larger audience over the years. In 2021, the website had over 340,000 unique users.
As regards the content, Unimondo tackles several topics under the umbrella of human rights. "If a bomb destroys a school somewhere, we will not describe the event, but rather explain why it happened and what the consequences may be", explained editor-in-chief Raffaele Crocco.
Crocco joined Unimondo's newsroom in 2020. He said that his goal was to revamp Unimondo's website and change the editorial strategy to publish audiovisual information and infographics regularly by the end of 2022
The publication is also part of the Oneworld international network.
