Founder Susana Fernández Molina of The Urban Activist worked in finance for many years and saw a need for a storytelling platform to bring grassroots solutions together. She believes a story out of New York can inspire action in Nairobi. What is effective in Buenos Aires could also work in Berlin. The Urban Activist focuses on local innovation and an engaged citizenry as key to finding answers to the world’s most pressing challenges and advancing progress. She says:
"The grassroots organisations in our cities don’t always get enough support. Companies tend to invest in bigger initiatives and I want to raise the voices of the smaller ones. The stories are too small to be featured in mainstream media but a city is a good arena to speak about global topics from a local perspective."
The Urban Activist investigates local initiatives and people on the ground who are working on responses to problems, creating a diversity in voices. Susana:
"I think we have too much negative news and people don't think positively. Regarding climate change, for example, people feel like they can't do anything about it. We want to inform them so that they take action."
The Urban Activist operates as a non-profit and keeps the publication free of ads. The platform relies on grants and partnerships with non-profit organisations for their funding.
