According to the director and co-founder of The Post Internazionale (TPI) Giulio Gambino, the media outlet was born as "a game between friends" in 2012. Gambino is the grandson of the co-founder of L'Espresso; the other co-founder of TPI, Stefano Mentana, is the son of famous TV anchorman Enrico Mentana. However, both have always stated that their families have never interfered with the project.
Initially, the publication dealt with foreign affairs. Relying on voluntary editorial staff, composed mainly of university students, it did not have a specific periodicity. Over the years, it has increasingly covered national topics. In 2017, it turned into a daily newspaper funded by an advertising model that quickly led to revenues of 1 million euros per year.
Today its newsroom consists of 15 employed people. TPI offers breaking news, in-depth articles, and opinion pieces. In 2021, it launched a weekly print publication to dig into one topic per issue from multiple angles.
Since its foundation, TPI has always organised paid journalism workshops for young professionals, and since 2019, it has also organised a summer festival.
