The Conversation is an international network of eight editions operating in 12 countries, providing news analyses and informed opinions written by academic experts working with professional journalists.
The organisation is registered as an educational charity in the UK, the Conversation Trust UK, based in London, with editors also located in Scotland, Wales, and England. The network began in Australia in March 2011, followed by the UK edition launched in May 2013, and the editions in the United States (2014), South Africa and France (2015), Canada and Indonesia (2017), and Spain (2018).
The Conversation's readership is mainly from the US, the UK, and Australia. The audience is diverse in professional backgrounds: among it are managers, senior executives, chief officers, and other decision-makers alongside teachers and educators, health practitioners, and those working in media, policy, or the government.
Its editors work with academics from universities and research institutes worldwide, bringing expertise into current affairs. The media outlet also explains new research findings and delves into topics that need more discussion, sharing their knowledge in an accessible way to non-specialists. The content is used as a source for evidence-based information in classrooms, the workplace, and among policymakers and legislators.
The Conversation aims to help rebuild trust in journalism. Authors are only commissioned to write on subjects within their expertise, including science, health, climate change, the environment, politics and society research, economics and business in theory and practice, history, arts, and culture.
The Conversation has a university membership funding model, where university partner members are the primary source of its revenue, and it also receives individual donations from readers.
