Founded by journalist Ciani-Sophia Hoeder in 2019, RosaMag gets its name from Rosa Parks and aims to increase the plurality in the German-speaking media landscape. The media organisation was born out of an unfulfilled need for a more representative magazine discussing issues concerning black women in Switzerland, Austria, and Germany.
The magazine publishes information across all sectors, including lifestyle, beauty, culture, and political topics. Through opinion pieces, reviews, interviews, and reports, Hoeder and her team of 15 people aim to represent role models for other Afro-German women and break cultural stereotypes.
Initially supported through the Media Lab Bayern accelerator, it is now financed through content collaborations and a community of over 400 members via Steady. Supporters can contribute starting from 2.5 euros per month, with the highest membership tier gaining access to the Instagram close friends list and behind the scenes insights of RosaMag. So far, paid memberships only cover 31% of the 5,000 euros a month goal.
The platform also features a shop selling self-produced books, calendars, and t-shirts. In 2021, RosaMag published the book Black is capitalised (in German: Schwarz wird großgeschrieben). In 2020, the organisation started a content collaboration with the online magazine Jetzt, in which the magazine republishes some articles from RoseMag. Apart from this stream of revenue, RosaMag offers native, affiliate, and sponsored posts, workshops, advisory services, and talks.
RosaMag publishes via its website and has a strong Instagram and Pinterest following, with some pieces available in audio form via Soundcloud.
In 2020, RosaMag was nominated for the Grimme Online Award, and in 2021 it won The Golden Blogger Award as Newcomer of the Year.
