RomNet is an independent media organisation covering news and stories about Hungary's biggest minority: the Roma. The organisation publishes news, interviews, reports, opinion pieces, essays, reviews, and investigative stories on politics, society, human rights, and lifestyle.
The founder of the media organisation is the non-profit organisation RomNet Media Foundation, whose mission is to provide information on the Roma and people living in poverty in Hungary and Central and Eastern Europe. The foundation aims to raise society's and MPs' awareness of the need to represent the interest of minorities and others excluded from society.
"The media [outlet] is needed to build community and strengthen identity. It has been proven that neither the mainstream nor the Roma media (if there is any, and if it can be considered as such) are willing or dare to deal with current, important public issues and are happy to entertain. The world of superficial news services, sensationalist articles and clippings is still alive and well today, and we have been fighting against it for two decades," the editor-in-chief Attila Hidvégi-B writes.
RomNet Media Foundation's most important platform is the website, but the team also publishes short news stories on social media, such as Facebook, where the media outlet has a community of 27,000 followers
RomNet tries to survive solely on individual donations.
