RARE is Finland's first media outlet that produces content only on social media. It was born out of a desire to shake up the Finnish media industry to bring journalism where young audiences are. It began to take shape as an idea in 2018 and has operated as a business since 2020. Contributors are young media makers from the media, journalism, and cultural sectors.

As a social-media-based outlet, RARE publishes short-form videos, infographics, images, and memes. Recently, the team behind RARE has also produced and published documentary films with the topics of Arctic research, democracy, and Finnish rave culture.

RARE collaborates with other media outlets and government bodies to produce information campaigns and journalistic content for millennial and gen Z audiences, including the public broadcaster Yle and the Finnish Prime Minister's Office.

It won the Uutisraivaaja Media Innovation Challenge in 2019. It is Finland's first social-media-based journalism platform and follows the guidelines of the Council for Mass Media, the self-regulating committee of the Finnish media industry.
