Self-funded by a group of seven professional journalists and photographers in 2020, RADAR Magazine aims to tell compelling stories about the interaction between the climate crisis, the environment and social justice — which the team considers to be the crucial challenges of the present time. As stated by RADAR’s director Marta Frigerio: “In the Italian media landscape, it was still missing an independent, ad-free, scientifically backed publication entirely devoted to environmental issues. That's why we decided to found our digital magazine”.
All the staff works on a freelance basis, so at first, the publication republished its features (both in Italian and English) for established international outlets such as the BBC, National Geographic, The New York Times and Nature.
Today, RADAR Magazine publishes original content from a growing network of contributors and from cross-border awarded projects. For example, in March 2023, it released an investigation about the "forever chemicals" PFAS, carried out by 18 European newsrooms and funded by Investigative Journalism for Europe (IJ4EU). Frigerio points out that the newsroom uses a solutions-driven approach to tackle the problems it covers, largely relies on visual storytelling by eminent professionals (such as multi-award winning photographer Elisabetta Zavoli) and is committed to inclusive communication.
