In 2015, Sarajevo science journalist, blogger, and activist Jelena Kalinić started blogging in her free time to promote science and boost scientific literacy. Her hobby soon became an essential source of verified, science-based information about vaccinations, health, scientific research and results, and other related topics.
Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, the author's articles, based on scientific data, have provided a counterbalance to the flood of fake news about the source of the virus, the way the infection spreads, or how to best treat it.
Kalinić won the 2022 European Science Journalist Award for her investigative stories analysing the government's complacency towards dubious drugs for Covid-19, the weak regulation of stem cell therapies, and the harassment of science journalists in the Balkans. In addition to Kalinić's articles, Quantum of Science also publishes scientifically-oriented articles from other local writers.
The blog is run by the Nauka i svijet association (in English: Science and the World), of which Kalinić is the vice-president. The association aims to make science popular and combat anti-scientific claims and narratives. Besides her blog, Kalinić writes about science for the Voice of America and the Vakcine.ba website.
Disclaimer:
In August 2023, the blog Quantum of Science grew into the website Naukagovori.ba, whose editor-in-chief is Jelena Kalinić. The topics covered remain the same, but the new format enables better technical possibilities for creating stories.
