Publika is an online publication covering social and political events. It reports on topics that are underreported in Georgia, such as the state of education and healthcare systems, and offers readers fact-based, unbiased journalism.
Publika was founded by eight journalists who previously worked for the print and online magazine Liberali. In 2019, due to creative differences with the owner and increased concerns about maintaining their journalistic freedom, the journalists decided to leave Liberali and founded Publika.
The outlet's mission is to promote the informed choice of Georgia's citizens and help to develop democracy in the country. "Our main achievement is that we are an entirely independent publication; independent of the government, business, influence groups, even self-censorship," its co-founder and director Zurab Vardiashvili said.
Publika's newsroom reports on breaking news, investigative stories and in-depth research, and produces blogs by staff writers and guests, including articles by high-profile commentators.
Covering diverse topics, the media outlet also provides educational and entertainment information, publishing stories on cultural topics such as literature, cinema, and sports.
Publika's journalists have received numerous local and international recognitions, such as the EU prize for Journalism. In 2020, the EU prize for Journalism was awarded to journalist Basti Mgaloblishvili for the best online or print blog, opinion or column in print or online media, and to journalist Sopo Aptsiauri for the best documentary photo reflecting EU values.
