Prometej.ba was created in 2011 as a student publication whose collaborators were then students from the municipality of Prozor-Rama, in the southwest part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. They aimed to create an independent site to write local stories without political influences. Today, it is an online platform where journalists, academics, and writers from across the country write critical articles and opinion pieces about society, politics, religion, and culture.
Under the name Prometej.ba (in English: Prometheus), the team investigates topics of importance to the citizens beyond the scope of daily news. The portal's current slogan is: "For a secular state and a secular society." Its editorial board states that Prometej.ba is an online space open to all perspectives, reflected in the diversity of its collaborators' political, religious, and ideological positions.
The portal has no full-time employees; it is run voluntarily by its founder and editor-in-chief, Franjo Šarčević, and his team. Occasionally, it receives grants from international donors and individual donations from its readers. To formalise the status of the journalism site and its activities, in 2015, Šarčević established the citizens' association Prometej ba, with the website being its main project.
