In 2015, the number of migrants setting foot in Italy peaked. Right-wing politicians and media often described the situation using the term "invasion". The Italian coalition for civil liberties and rights (CILD), composed of 44 national non-profit organisations, felt the need to create a data-driven informative platform regarding migrations to fight stereotypes and disinformation.
In a few months, Open Migration was online. Its main feature was an interactive dashboard, including detailed charts and maps of migrants arrivals. That dashboard soon became a source for journalists and even United Nations consultants. At that time, the publication reached over 50,000 monthly unique users.
Over time, alongside the dashboard, it started hosting original analyses and narrative reports by freelancers.
Currently, Open Migration is in a strategic content review process. Director Tommaso Fusco explained: "Today, there are an increasing number of good journalists dealing with migrations in Italy. Probably, our publication will focus on environmental migrants, still an unexplored issue." Also, he added, the website will host more first-person stories of migrants and showcase examples of best practices in Europe.
Open Migration is not a registered publication. The project is mainly funded by the Open Society Foundations, and since the beginning, it has been publishing information in Italian and English.
