NEWIPE is a newly-launched online media outlet reporting on and for the Roma population in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was founded in January 2022 by award-winning journalist Dalibor Tanić, who previously worked as a journalist and editor in various media outlets in the country. The site is a project of the Asocijacija mladih Roma Aksiom (in English: Bosnian Aksiom Roma Youth Association). Under the slogan "Roma for Roma", NEWIPE is one of the few media in the country focusing on the Roma community.
The project was created to offer balanced, constructive, and detailed information on topics of interest to the community in a context where information published by mainstream media is often biased, stereotyped, or sensationalist. In addition to Roma community stories, the media outlet publishes information on human rights protection and social affairs.
Although national and local public broadcasters are required to publish information related to national minorities living in Bosnia and Herzegovina regularly, including the Roma population, they often neglect to do so. "The need to introduce into the public media space topics from the Roma community, and about it, is as old as the Roma movement in Bosnia-Herzegovina", NEWIPE's team states.
The portal's name comes from the Romani word nevipe, which means "news". The letter "v" was replaced by the letter "w" to emphasise the "new" concept that the portal introduces to the country's media scene.
