Medyascope traces its roots back to the summer of 2015, when journalist Ruşen Çakır began streaming political commentaries on his Periscope app account. Staying true to its origins, today Medyascope primarily offers video content on its website and YouTube channel.
The full-time team consists of more than 50 employees, making it one of the largest digital independent newsrooms in the country.
Recently, it has started to produce written investigative pieces and live coverage of breaking news. However, political and social commentary still covers nearly every topic in discussion, with contributors conducting regular programming.
The outlet won the International Press Institute (IPI) Free Media Pioneer Award in 2016 and the Reporters Without Borders' Press Freedom Prize in 2017.
Grants are the primary organisation's source of revenue, and the team also plans to increase advertising and sponsorship revenues. Medyascope is among Turkey's first digital-native news organisations to form sustainable audience support through individual donations and crowdfunding, both on YouTube.
The organisation publishes information about the team and the institutional grants it receives to carry out its journalism.
