Kloshletter is the first independent general information newsletter in Spain. It was founded in 2017 by journalist Charo Marcos who, after 20 years of experience, set out "to help people navigate the ocean of news every morning and leave home well informed", as she described.
From Monday to Friday, starting at 7:00am, she reads more than 30 regional, national and international media. "From there, we select, write, and explain. No machines, no robots, no algorithms, just journalistic criteria," Marcos explained.
The result is a daily news summary with a simple design and no images, written in a personal, direct, clear, and conversational tone which, according to its founder, provides context and helps understand why information is essential and how it affects people. "I spend a lot of time finding the right tone," she admitted.
Today the newsletter has 30,000 subscribers, 70% of which are women. Feminine inspiration is two-fold. On the one hand, to devise her newsletter, Marcos was influenced by similar products, such as the newsletters of Quartz or The New York Times, and some specifically aimed at women, such as The Skimm. On the other hand, she found the name in the phonetics of cloche, a hat that women wore in the 1920s to symbolise their security and empowerment.
For a year and a half, Marcos combined Kloshletter with her work at a communication agency. At the end of 2018, she quit that job to focus on the newsletter full-time. Today she works with a team of five part-time people.
The newsletter is available for free; it obtains revenue from native and branded advertising, and from the development of products with its brand for third parties.
Since October 2020, Kloshletter is also a podcast which can be listened from Monday to Friday on Spotify, starting at 8:00am.
