The Italian word dispaccio shares the meaning with its English counterpart: a dispatch is a message sent with a purpose. For founder Claudio Cordova, the purpose has always been investigating and uncovering criminal activities in his native region of Calabria. The politics, the economy and the society of this Italian region are strongly affected by the international criminal organisation 'Ndrangheta.
Dismissed from his previous job as a journalist after exposing the criminal connections of a local politician, Cordova decided to set up his own digital native daily newspaper alongside colleague Alessia Candito.
Since April 2012, Il Dispaccio has been online as a generalist newspaper dealing with politics, economy, culture, and sports. It aims to dig into the multiple ramifications of the 'Ndrangheta in Calabria and its five provinces, relying on a small newsroom and a team of local freelance reporters.
Today, the webpage reaches over one million unique users annually, a remarkable number considering that the population of Calabria is less than two million.
Il Dispaccio wants to stay independent from political influences, so it has never applied for public funds. Its primary revenue source is advertising, an area entrusted to an external agency. Il Dispaccio is owned by the association Quadrante Sud, founded by Claudio Cordova.
