Femmekan is a non-profit journalistic project founded by Gulnar Salimova in 2020. It is one of the few media outlets in Azerbaijan that publishes information only on women's issues.
According to its founder, women are still considered the second gender in Azerbaijani society, and the number of women whose rights are not recognised is exceptionally high. Few resources shed light on their problems and provide them with inspirational materials.
The website is regularly updated. Also, original materials are presented on the platform's social media channels.
The organisation publishes primarily solutions journalism, "because there is too much negative news about this topic in the Azerbaijani media. However, women in misery need some stimulus. Therefore, we are trying to create content that will motivate women in difficult situations to take action," Salimova says.
When talking about inspirational materials, she draws attention to, for example, those related to social entrepreneurship. According to Salimova, such materials can be helpful for housewives and women with limited work opportunities.
"In other words, our general goal is that women in Azerbaijan ensure their freedom as much as possible and reduce their financial dependence. The information we share focuses on these areas," Salimova says.
Although the platform's core is feminist rhetoric, it is possible to find information on many topics, from business to technology, under the common theme of women's rights.
Femmekan's newsroom works from home and covers only Azerbaijan. In the future, the team intends to make the platform more effective using tools such as newsletters and memberships.
