ereb is the successor to Cafébabel, the first multilingual European participatory media. Created in 2001 by European students in Strasbourg, Cafébabel was based on a voluntary model, which was difficult to maintain. That's why three members of the team decided to set up another ad hoc organisation, a for-profit company, which would give them access to public funding for the media and enable them to develop. As such, ereb is about successfully transforming a voluntary project into a profitable one.
The organisation has also created a network of independent cross-border media, the Sphera Network, which brings together 10 media organisations.
Another specific feature is that the outlet includes its community in its editorial choices. Members can choose stories to be published based on three major themes: social Europe, social justice/identity and exile/climate emergency.
ereb also offers a newsletter called In Vivo, which it describes as a combination of cross-border journalism and intimate stories.
As the publication notes, “ereb” was used by the ancient Phoenicians to mean “on the other side of the Bosporus”.
