De Utrechtse Internet Courant - DUIC (In English: The Internet Newspaper of Utrecht) is a local digital news publication covering the Dutch city of Utrecht.
It was founded in 2011 by committed Utrecht citizens who saw that something was missing in the coverage of their city. They had noticed an impoverishment of the local media landscape. And so, they thought it was a good idea to start a media outlet themselves.
The online media is there to "inform citizens of Utrecht," the editor-in-chief Robert Oosterbroek said. According to him, news should relate to people's lives in the city. The publication's topics can vary widely, but stories can and should be "a little fun". "We are trying to highlight the positive aspects of Utrecht. We do not shy away from a cheerful story about a new entrepreneur in the city," Oosterbroek added. DUIC publishes weekly updates about the city's small business owners and the restaurant sector.
DUIC also covers topics concerning the municipality, including local politics, decision-making, and urban development. The information is valuable as long as the stories "relate to the immediate living environment of the city's inhabitants".
In 2015, its owners decided to publish a weekly print newspaper; citizens can find these at different distribution points throughout the city. All of DUIC's information is free, both digitally and on paper. Since December 2022, the media outlet is sharing a newsroom in the centre of Utrecht with the regional broadcaster RTV Utrecht and with students of the Hogeschool Utrecht and the ROC Midden Nederland, with the aim of experimenting together with new forms of journalism.
