Among the journalists who attend the FC Barcelona soccer team press conferences, one has not yet finished his degree. He is a student at the public Universitat Pompeu Fabra, and part of the editorial staff of Diari de Barcelona, an outlet launched by the same university in 2021. Like him, other final year journalism students cover the city's current affairs as professional journalists, developing an outlet aimed at young audiences.

Diari de Barcelona was designed by a group of 17 students and a journalist, Roger Cassany, who works as an associate professor. Its Manual of Style states that the media outlet aims to become "an informative reference for young people with a journalism that is daring, critical, rigorous and committed to truth and plurality of information."

Also, according to its Code of Ethics, it wants to "bring a new perspective to current affairs from a young and multicultural point of view, focused on five axes: feminism, visibility of vulnerable groups, housing, environmental awareness, and the future".

The editorial staff consists of about 30 undergraduate students distributed in three terms, and coordinated by five professional journalists who work as associate professors. "It's not a university newspaper; it's an independent multimedia outlet done by journalism students," Cassany emphasised. The website is updated 365 days a year, and they also produce podcasts and a newsletter.

According to Cassany, the impact for students is very high, as they work alongside professionals, their work is recognised by sources, and they receive feedback through social networks. "We have a humble but significant audience. We are becoming the voice of a generation in Barcelona; we feel legitimised," he added.

The Universitat Pompeu Fabra sustains the project with the support of the Barcelona City Council and the provincial council. The outlet has also received grants from the European Parliament. Consolidating the project's sustainability is one of the outlet's challenges in the medium term, according to Cassany.
