Founded in 2019, Debreciner is an independent digital media outlet based in Debrecen, the second-largest city in Hungary. It covers general news in eastern Hungary in the form of interviews, features, investigative and narrative journalism articles, opinion pieces, reviews, essays, and chronicles.
Before launching the website, the team published its stories on Facebook, which they now have over 46,000 followers.
The team wanted to create a site that "advocates for the unquestionable importance of unqualified democracy and freedom of the press" and "provides room for all opinions that speak honestly about public affairs; and where those who are silenced elsewhere can speak out".
The organisation believes in serving the audience with news and information reflecting readers' needs and standing by those living on the fringes of society. It holds monthly open editorial meetings, which readers can attend, discuss their problems, and ask journalists questions.
With almost one million unique users in 12 months, the organisation has a broad audience for a team that comprises up to three full-time employees, six freelancers, and six volunteers.
Debreciner is published by a non-profit organisation, so most of its revenue comes from grants from private donor organisations. The audience also contributes to Debreciner's financial security, with a subscription model, crowdfunding campaigns, and individual donations playing the most significant role.
