Argonotlar publishes original information produced by a vast network of contributors. It publishes reviews, interviews, features and opinion pieces; it is a deliberate editorial choice.

The outlet sets itself at the intersection of media, art and civil society, producing evergreen information focused on Queer Art practices, long-form journalism pieces, and essays on Turkish contemporary art history.

Its founder, Kültigin Kağan Akbulut, first launched a newsletter in 2017. In 2020, he used his connections and gained knowledge of media products, along with some small grants from philanthropic organisations, to found Argonotlar as a website.

For financial sustainability, Argonotlar thrives on going beyond the private donations of leading art galleries and contemporary art patrons to remain independent. It finances itself through grants, consultancy services, training for journalists, crowdfunding and advertising.

For the near future, it plans to increase the number of English articles to attract an international audience interested in the Turkish contemporary art scene.

The organisation also aims to publish a printed almanac in 2023.
