African Arguments is a media outlet providing international journalism on Africa and Africans, by authors who are predominantly of African descent. Its goal is to raise awareness of the continent's issues with deep analyses, thought-provoking essays, open and informed debate, and engaging original stories.
African Arguments brings a counter-narrative to mainstream international coverage of Africa; rather than focusing on bad news happening in the continent with foreign reporters and through foreign lenses, the newsroom produces and investigates stories that matter for Africans, amplifying a diversity of voices.
The media outlet covers topics related to politics, economics, gender, the environment, culture, and social affairs. It hosts a subsection called Debating Ideas, which offers academic discussions around the African Arguments book series.
In 2021, African Arguments piloted a fellowship scheme, offering mentorship and training for young freelance journalists based in Africa. The fellowship was designed to support African journalists under 30 in building the skills necessary for a sustainable career as freelance journalists.
African Arguments is founded by the Royal African Society (RAS), a membership organisation providing opportunities for people to connect and celebrate Africa through events, publications, and digital channels. The publication is co-founded with The World Peace Foundation and International Africa Institute, and sustained mainly by grants from private and philanthropic organisations, local and national advertising, and individual donations.
