The Greenwich area of London was going through many changes, and journalist Darryl Chamberlain, a resident, realised the inadequacy of the local news coverage. So, in 2008 he founded 853, initially as a personal blog. Over time, he began to dig into the issues happening in the area. In 2017 it started accepting donations from readers, and in 2023 it was relaunched as The Greenwich Wire.
The publication covers and publishes stories of public interest and relevant to the local community. Since its creation, The Greenwich Wire has informed residents about local authorities' procedures, local businesses and organisations, politics, transport, infrastructure, planning, and more about what is happening in South East London, mainly in the Greenwich borough.
It is managed by Flyover Media, a Community Interest Company (CIC), which reinvests all the profits into the business to guarantee that the local community will have a sustainable news service. The media outlet is also a member of the Independent Community News Network (ICNN).
The organisation is a member of the Local Democracy Reporting Service, a BBC-funded scheme in partnership with regional news organisations, aiming to support public service reporting and improve skills in journalism.
Individual donations and grants from philanthropic organisations are the primary revenue sources of The Greenwich Wire.
