Founded in 2010 as Hír24 and rebranded in 2017, 24.hu is one of the leading news websites in Hungary, publishing the latest news, in-depth features, analyses, and reviews on culture, sports, science, and technology. It is a part of the Hungarian-owned independent media group Central.
Starting in 2010 as Hír24, its mission was to provide breaking news. However, in 2011, more emphasis was placed on entertainment. In the next few years, the organisation expanded its portfolio with technology, media, and movie information and concentrated more on social media, especially its Facebook presence.
In 2014, businessman Zoltán Varga bought the company from Finnish media company Sanoma, and the following year Hír24 was renamed 24.hu. After a complete redesign that affected both the content and the structure of the website, 24.hu has become one of the leading news websites in Hungary.
With a newsroom of 70 full-time, five part-time journalists and 30 freelancers, the organisation covers general news on various topics, including politics, entertainment, economy, sports, science, education, lifestyle, society, and human rights. Besides the website, 24.hu is strong in the newsletter format (30,000+ subscribers) and on YouTube and has a mobile app and several podcasts.
As a for-profit company, its most important revenue comes from advertising. 24.hu also provides an ad-free subscription format and a paywall for longer sports articles.
